I am the kind of artist who loves to make things. I work in all media and I am constantly learning new techniques. Throughout decades of artistic experimentation I have always come back to printmaking, which is what I studied at RISD in the 1970’s. I love the processes involved in creating etched plates and carved blocks, and I am always surprised by the prints that result from inking these blocks. All parts of the process engage me. Recently I have been working on a series of large linoleum block prints about birds. The birds are abstracted and simplified, but they are inspired by looking at birds. They are each placed in a landscape filled with patterned circles and swirling lines, which could represent energy fields, weather systems, planets, microscopic particles, or the cycles of life. I like to work in a series because the images speak to each other and I get deeply into an idea by continuing to work within a certain format. The specific influences that inspired the bird series include Audubon and Hokusai.
